around Holiday Home Santa Caterina in Sobrestany

While Sobrestany is located at the foot of the Montgrí mountain range, it is also on the edge of a vast plain dotted with small villages that stretch as far as Roses. These villages are connected by country roads and, fortunately, by numerous paths through fields that are perfect for extended bike tours.

From Sobrestany to Bellcaire and Verges

Bike tour Sobrestany Bellcaire Verges

The route from Sobrestany to Verges is particularly recommended on Sundays, as the flea market is held in Verges. At the Fonda opposite the flea market, you can enjoy a coffee and a sandwich for a quick break. The place is lively and crowded, often visited by the traders as well. Small tip: if you want to eat something, you need to sit at a table—the bar is only for drinks.

Bike tour Sobrestany Bellcaire Verges

The ride from Sobrestany to Bellcaire follows the old country road toward Ullà (avoiding the new, heavily trafficked road) to Bellcaire. From there, cross the traffic light and head straight through the village until you reach the path that runs alongside the water canal. You may encounter a tractor occasionally, but otherwise, it is peaceful. Walkers will greet you with a friendly "Déu" ("Good day"). The route is flat, and as it is not very long, fatigue is unlikely. However, longer alternatives are available on Google Maps.

From Sobrestany to l'Escala and further to Empúries or Cala Montgó

Bike tour Sobrestany L'Escala Bike tour Sobrestany L'Escala

One of the shortest routes leads to l'Escala via a field path, ideal for daily shopping at the French bakery Elies or at one of the local supermarkets (Carrefour, Aldi, Mercadona, LIDL...). The ride to the village entrance takes about 15 minutes along a wide, scarcely used field path. After Torre Ferrana, turn left towards l'Escala. If you continue, the path gets steeper and rockier, so a mountain bike and repair gear are highly recommended—this is not the case for the route to l'Escala itself.

At the village entrance, there is an ALDI. From here, you can continue via paved village roads to Empúries with its beautiful Muscleres beaches (Shell Beaches). The route to Cala Montgó is a bit more challenging, with continuous inclines and declines.

On your way back, avoid the l'Escala-Bellcaire main road, where cars often travel at 140km/h on a relatively narrow two-lane road, overtaking cyclists closely. Instead, use the safer field paths located behind the main road.

From Sobrestany to Ullà

Bike tour Sobrestany Bellcaire Ullà

The trip to Ullà, a village near Torroella, is particularly rewarding during the Fira de la Poma d'Ullà (Apple Festival). At other times of the year, the varied surroundings make the trip worthwhile.

The route starts from Sobrestany along the quiet country road to Bellcaire and then turns south towards Torroella de Montgrí, passing by the Santa Caterina Monastery. The road is poorly paved, and you will rarely encounter cars. Towards the end, the road gently slopes upwards.

From Sobrestany via Ullà and the old river path to Torroella

Bike tour Sobrestany Torroella

The half-hour excursion goes via Ullà (see above) to Torroella. In Ullà, cross the main road and continue along a field path that runs along the old riverbank towards Torroella.
